certain context. 3 00:00:32.854 --> 00:00:40.039 I titled today's presentation, The Blood of the Sabbath. 4 00:00:41.189 --> 00:00:54.916 So we're going to understand this relationship between Jesus's blood and the Sabbath and what that means to us today. 5 00:00:54.926 --> 00:01:05.239 In order to come to that, we need to do a little bit of a dive into the calendar of God. 6 00:01:06.010 --> 00:01:14.379 So first I'm going to talk about the calendar, just briefly, but some of the important parts, 7 00:01:14.390 --> 00:01:21.579 and then we will look more at how that relates to the blood and to the Sabbath, 8 00:01:21.590 --> 00:01:24.640 connecting those things together. 9 00:01:26.299 --> 00:01:32.830 So first of all, we are familiar with what is known as the Gregorian calendar. 10 00:01:32.840 --> 00:01:36.437 The Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar, 11 00:01:36.447 --> 00:01:46.310 it means every year on the Gregorian calendar we come back and the sun is in the same place as it was the year prior. 12 00:01:47.620 --> 00:01:58.472 But the Bible calendar is not strictly a solar calendar, but a lunar calendar, with some influence from the sun as well, 13 00:01:58.482 --> 00:02:02.180 we will talk about that in a little bit. 14 00:02:04.459 --> 00:02:15.199 But there is a great deal of confusion, honestly, surrounding everything relating to any Hebrew or biblical calendar, 15 00:02:15.209 --> 00:02:25.205 because there's so many different possibilities and ideas that people have for how these things are defined. 16 00:02:25.215 --> 00:02:33.099 Unfortunately, many of them, or most of them, are lacking a truly biblical foundation. 17 00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:43.537 There aren't, in certain cases, a lot of details given in the Bible about the calendar, 18 00:02:43.547 --> 00:02:51.746 and that leaves many people to feel free to read into the Bible their own ideas, 19 00:02:51.756 --> 00:02:59.448 instead of extracting from the Bible what the information is that is there, 20 00:02:59.458 --> 00:03:03.300 giving understanding of the calendar. 21 00:03:05.219 --> 00:03:15.357 So looking at Exodus chapter 12, this is where the children of Israel were just about to come out of Egypt. 22 00:03:15.367 --> 00:03:19.810 The plagues had fallen, they're ready to leave. 23 00:03:20.530 --> 00:03:32.412 And then the Lord speaks to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, this month shall be unto you the beginning of months. 24 00:03:32.422 --> 00:03:36.810 It shall be the first month of the year to you. 25 00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:41.042 So God is giving his people a calendar. 26 00:03:41.052 --> 00:03:50.881 They didn't have, or if they had one, they lost it from before, so they had been in slavery for hundreds of years. 27 00:03:50.891 --> 00:03:56.389 Now he's giving them anew the calendar, and he says, this month. 28 00:03:57.150 --> 00:04:03.415 Now if I ask you, what is this month, you'll say, well, it's April. 29 00:04:03.425 --> 00:04:06.979 You don't need any reference for that. 30 00:04:06.989 --> 00:04:12.580 But in the Hebrew thinking, they were not abstract thinkers. 31 00:04:14.370 --> 00:04:16.636 They were very tangible. 32 00:04:16.646 --> 00:04:24.014 And when God told Moses this month, he was, as it were, pointing to something. 33 00:04:24.024 --> 00:04:27.310 There was something tangible there. 34 00:04:28.120 --> 00:04:36.374 And in fact, the word month is translated as month, but it's the very same word as moon. 35 00:04:36.384 --> 00:04:47.734 So this could equally well be translated, this moon shall be unto you the beginning of moons, or the beginning of months. 36 00:04:47.744 --> 00:04:52.790 That's how they measured the months was with the moon. 37 00:04:54.639 --> 00:05:05.298 So it becomes clear then that the object in reference for the month was the moon. 38 00:05:05.308 --> 00:05:08.335 He pointed to the moon. 39 00:05:08.345 --> 00:05:22.800 When the new month was registered in Israel, it was the first time they could see the moon after the new moon. 40 00:05:23.300 --> 00:05:39.835 So every month, the moon disappears, and then the first sliver of light, when you can just see the moon, that is then when that new moon, 41 00:05:39.845 --> 00:05:42.611 that new month begins. 42 00:05:42.621 --> 00:05:51.070 And it's interesting because that happens when you first see the moon. 43 00:05:51.080 --> 00:05:52.629 It's too dim. 44 00:05:52.759 --> 00:05:58.651 It's so thin, you can't really see it until the sun sets. 45 00:05:58.661 --> 00:06:07.342 And then when the dusk is dark enough, you can start to see that sliver of the moon. 46 00:06:07.352 --> 00:06:11.569 But the moon is at the same time setting. 47 00:06:12.230 --> 00:06:24.301 So there's just a short period of time when you have this opportunity to see the moon in that first day of the month. 48 00:06:24.311 --> 00:06:29.459 And that defines how they would observe the month. 49 00:06:29.910 --> 00:06:36.901 And it also points to when they would see it, then they would say, okay, this is the first day of the month, 50 00:06:36.911 --> 00:06:39.750 and it was that day that began with sunset. 51 00:06:40.579 --> 00:06:49.613 So when the sun set, then they observed the moon, okay, this is the first day of the new month. 52 00:06:49.623 --> 00:06:57.326 So that's just the basic operation of how a couple of parts of the calendar work. 53 00:06:57.336 --> 00:07:00.740 The new moon defining the new month. 54 00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:14.655 But we see there are some other aspects that will come out when we study the calendar with respect to the cross. 55 00:07:14.665 --> 00:07:18.141 That's what we're going to do. 56 00:07:18.151 --> 00:07:30.180 Just briefly, looking at a prophecy in the Bible that points to the time when Jesus was to be crucified. 57 00:07:30.540 --> 00:07:35.007 I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about this prophecy. 58 00:07:35.017 --> 00:07:39.851 It's a rather complicated and difficult prophecy in some respects. 59 00:07:39.861 --> 00:07:43.649 But I'm just going to draw a few key points from it. 60 00:07:43.649 --> 00:07:47.618 It comes from Daniel chapter 9, verse 25 to 27. 61 00:07:47.628 --> 00:07:50.668 It's known as the 70 weeks prophecy. 62 00:07:50.678 --> 00:07:58.522 Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the commandments to restore and to 63 00:07:58.532 --> 00:08:06.449 rebuild Jerusalem unto Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks and three score and two weeks. 64 00:08:07.100 --> 00:08:09.529 In other words, 69 weeks. 65 00:08:09.539 --> 00:08:13.912 So we have the time frame being defined here. 66 00:08:13.922 --> 00:08:17.790 From a commandment to restore Jerusalem. 67 00:08:17.860 --> 00:08:25.904 This prophecy was given to Daniel at a time when they were captive in Babylon. 68 00:08:25.914 --> 00:08:28.390 Jerusalem was destroyed. 69 00:08:28.400 --> 00:08:39.210 And so the prophecy was that there would come a commandment to rebuild and restore the city of Jerusalem. 70 00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:45.133 And that would be a marker in time at the beginning. 71 00:08:45.143 --> 00:08:51.720 And then 69 weeks, then would come Messiah the Prince, that is, Jesus. 72 00:08:53.309 --> 00:09:03.160 The prophecy continues, the street shall be built again and the wall even in troublous times and after three score and two weeks, 73 00:09:03.170 --> 00:09:05.451 that's the 69 weeks in total, 74 00:09:05.461 --> 00:09:07.436 shall Messiah be cut off, 75 00:09:07.446 --> 00:09:09.039 but not for himself. 76 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:17.700 So after that time, Jesus would be cut off or he would give his life, but not for himself because he gave his life for many others. 77 00:09:18.389 --> 00:09:23.398 And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary 78 00:09:23.408 --> 00:09:27.640 and the end thereof shall be with a flood and until the end of the war, 79 00:09:27.650 --> 00:09:29.289 desolations are determined. 80 00:09:30.179 --> 00:09:38.860 And then it says this, and he shall, that is Jesus, the Messiah, shall confirm the covenant with many for one week. 81 00:09:39.299 --> 00:09:40.889 That's the 70th week. 82 00:09:40.899 --> 00:09:44.230 So there's 69 weeks and then this 70th week. 83 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:51.110 And in the midst of that 70th week, he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. 84 00:09:51.110 --> 00:10:00.528 So it's saying specifically when Jesus would die in the middle of that 70th week, 85 00:10:00.538 --> 00:10:09.597 which comes that 70 weeks after the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. 86 00:10:09.607 --> 00:10:18.899 So in total, 69 plus half a week is when Jesus would give his life on the cross. 87 00:10:19.210 --> 00:10:25.791 The last bit of the verse here, I didn't finish, and for the overspreading of abominations, he shall make it desolate, 88 00:10:25.801 --> 00:10:27.242 even to the consummation, 89 00:10:27.252 --> 00:10:30.309 and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. 90 00:10:30.659 --> 00:10:38.166 So that's just talking about other aspects of the prophecy, not so much our concern at the moment. 91 00:10:38.176 --> 00:10:44.763 But the question is, what decree is it talking about to restore and rebuild Jerusalem? 92 00:10:44.773 --> 00:10:47.300 Because there were more than one. 93 00:10:47.310 --> 00:10:51.570 In fact, there are three of them described in the Bible. 94 00:10:52.120 --> 00:11:00.383 In the book of Ezra, there's one in chapter one, one in chapter six, and one in chapter seven. 95 00:11:00.393 --> 00:11:07.679 Each of these has some element of a command to go and restore or rebuild Jerusalem. 96 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:19.266 But in particular, I'm just doing an overview here, so I'm not going to go over the details. 97 00:11:19.276 --> 00:11:30.850 But historically, in 457 BC, King Artaxerxes of Persia gave the command that is the relevant one. 98 00:11:31.870 --> 00:11:48.244 And when we calculate the 69 weeks, of course these are weeks of years in this prophecy, then that's 483 years, 99 00:11:48.254 --> 00:11:53.259 and that comes to the year 27 AD. 100 00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:58.055 And what was significant about that year? 101 00:11:58.065 --> 00:12:07.669 The prophecy said that was the time when Messiah the Prince would come, and indeed, this was the year when he began his ministry. 102 00:12:08.580 --> 00:12:13.246 But it was the beginning of that 70th week. 103 00:12:13.256 --> 00:12:26.271 In the middle of that 70th week, that would be after three and a half years from AD 27, that would be in the year AD 31, 104 00:12:26.281 --> 00:12:30.610 that would be when Jesus was crucified. 105 00:12:31.250 --> 00:12:45.292 So what we have is a biblical foundation that gives us the year through understanding the prophecy when Jesus was crucified, 106 00:12:45.302 --> 00:12:48.350 and that's very important. 107 00:12:50.570 --> 00:13:03.422 Unfortunately, many people don't understand this relationship, and it's not completely without reason, because this is just the year, 108 00:13:03.432 --> 00:13:10.379 but we also want to know the time of the year that Jesus was crucified. 109 00:13:10.799 --> 00:13:12.352 What day was it? 110 00:13:12.362 --> 00:13:20.889 Well, it's clear in the Bible that Jesus was crucified on a certain feast day in Israel. 111 00:13:21.590 --> 00:13:24.185 What feast day was that? 112 00:13:24.195 --> 00:13:26.142 Passover, exactly. 113 00:13:26.152 --> 00:13:36.319 So Jesus died on Passover, and we have a biblical definition for when Passover should be held. 114 00:13:36.329 --> 00:13:42.139 Passover is on the 14th day of the first Hebrew month. 115 00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:45.465 Now here's the thing. 116 00:13:45.475 --> 00:13:56.271 When we look at the calendar, the first month, Hebrew month, is called Nisan, and that happens to come in March, 117 00:13:56.281 --> 00:13:59.259 thereabouts in March of AD 31. 118 00:14:01.379 --> 00:14:13.043 And in that year of AD 31, on the Julian calendar, this was before the Gregorian calendar, we find the Julian calendar, 119 00:14:13.053 --> 00:14:15.493 March began on Thursday, 120 00:14:15.503 --> 00:14:19.610 and this would be the calendar for March. 121 00:14:19.610 --> 00:14:33.508 So in the faded gray is March, and then black shows when the first month of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar would begin. 122 00:14:33.518 --> 00:14:45.149 And so that would be here, and then you would count until the 14th day, and it comes on a Tuesday. 123 00:14:47.600 --> 00:14:58.534 So if this is the correct time when Jesus was crucified, we know he was crucified on Passover, the 14th day of the first month, 124 00:14:58.544 --> 00:15:01.289 that would have been a Tuesday. 125 00:15:03.330 --> --> 00:15:45.090 That's the spring equinox. 132 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:56.429 Okay, it can vary a little bit, but that's the official beginning of the year, at least on the solar calendar. 133 Egypt, 147 00:17:17.615 --> 00:17:20.750 out of the house of bondage. 148 00:17:21.680 --> 00:17:26.339 This day came ye out in the month Abib, okay? 149 00:17:26.339 --> 00:17:41.759 That's the same as Nisan, it's just Nisan is the later term for the same month, but this is the Hebrew word, and in Hebrew, 150 00:17:41.769 --> 00:17:47.150 this word Abib refers to the fresh barley. 151 00:17:47.579 --> 00:18:01.250 When they had barley that would grow, the grass in Israel, plenty, and when it would be fresh and green, that was called Abib. 152 00:18:01.250 --> 00:18:17.769 That was how they knew when it was that month, is when the season, when the grass showed, it's Abib, then they knew that was the month. 153 00:18:18.359 --> 00:18:30.664 So it wasn't strictly just by observing the moon, but they would observe the moon, and if there was barley that was Abib, 154 00:18:30.674 --> 00:18:34.325 then that would be the first month, 155 00:18:34.335 --> 00:18:35.546 but if not, or maybe two days after the astronomical new moon, which was on the 10th in that case. 166 00:20:00.359 --> 00:20:14.974 But details aside, counting the 14 days, lo and behold, you have a Friday for --> 00:21:38.710 Now, this was Passover on the 14th, but there were certain Sabbaths that were declared as ceremonial Sabbaths in the feast seasons of God. 177 00:21:39.869 --> 00:21:47.420 And there was a week of unleavened bread that began immediately after the Passover. 178 00:21:48.240 --> 00:21:59.425 On the 15th day of the month, that was the first day of unleavened bread, and that was declared a ceremonial Sabbath. 179 00:21:59.435 --> 00:22:02.685 Now, here's the interesting thing. 180 00:22:02.695 --> 00:22:07.359 That ceremonial Sabbath fell on a weekly Sabbath. 181 00:22:09.190 --> 00:22:14.747 So there's two types of Sabbaths that we're talking about here. 182 00:22:14.757 --> 00:22:22.432 Every seven days, you have the weekly Sabbath, but there's also the ceremonial 00:24:19.248 And then in this statement, that Sabbath day was a high day, and high day is what they would call those ceremonial Sabbaths. 203 00:24:19.258 --> 00:24:20.609 They were high days. 204 00:24:21.450 --> 00:24:28.970 And so this is saying that high day of the first day of unleavened bread was also a Sabbath day, a weekly Sabbath day. 205 00:24:29.680 --> 00:24:39.853 That's what it's pointing out, making that distinction or clarifying that point that the two were in that time overlapping, 206 00:24:39.863 --> 00:24:43.410 the weekly Sabbath and the festal Sabbath. 207 00:24:44.559 --> 00:24:58.576 Paul, in Colossians, tells us something about these Sabbaths because there's a significance in this overlapping of the Sabbaths, 208 00:24:58.586 --> 00:25:06.569 not the least of which is that Jesus was buried in the tomb on that day. 209 00:25:06.920 --> 00:25:15.425 That gives it a lot of significance, but there's also prophetic significance, and that's what Paul refers to in Colossians 2, 210 00:25:15.435 --> 00:25:16.650 verses 16 and 17. 211 00:25:16.940 --> 00:25:26.740 Let no man therefore judge you in meat or in drink or in respect of an holy day or of the new moon or of the Sabbath days. 212 00:25:26.750 --> 00:25:33.970 And then he says, those Sabbath days or these things which are a shadow of things to come. 213 00:25:34.819 --> 00:25:41.475 That means they're prophetic of things yet to come in the future. 214 00:25:41.485 --> 00:25:45.683 But the body or the essence is of Christ. 215 00:25:45.693 --> 00:25:49.359 The significance of it is in 00:26:59.667 And these Sabbaths and high Sabbaths, once we understand God's calendar, we can see how that plays out in our time. 228 00:26:59.677 --> 00:27:06.740 And so we can know exactly when the
